Well, I promised that I would be smiling!
I have to confess that I was not smiling all the way round the London Marathon on Sunday. I didn’t do the time I was hoping for. I set my sights on sub 4 hours and I ended up doing 4.21:40. I knew most of the way round that sub 4 was not on the cards, as it took so long to get going at the start, and I just didn’t feel that great. The last 7 miles were very slow and painful, although, I have to say, nothing in comparison with childbirth.
My smile returned every time I reminded myself that I was achieving something that I had wanted to achieve for a long time – running the London Marathon. Running it was the most important thing, the time was secondary to that.
My smile was also big and wide at the two points in the race when I heard familiar voices from the crowds. My best friend and husband were scurrying around London trying to follow the race and picked me out from the crowds at about 13 miles. My parents had come down from the midlands on a coach to watch me, and I was worried that they had come all that way and not seen me. Then at about 23 miles, I heard the unmistakable booming voice of my Dad. I turned back to give them a wave and a huge grin.
My smile was back at the finish line as I thought “it’s finally over!” It was even bigger when my best friend and husband found me at the meet and greet area. That’s their arms around me in the photo above – I’ve cropped them out of it as I know they’d rather not have their photos on here after they’d been running all over London themselves, in their efforts to try and cheer me on.
My smile is huge in this photo because I was so glad that they were there for me, like they always are.
I’m smiling now, because I’m laughing at myself – for that last few miles I was vowing “never again”. Shortly after this photo was taken, we were planning where they would position themselves to watch me next time I did it. I’m also smiling because I’ve already raised more money than I’d hoped for the charity Children With Leukaemia. If anyone is interested, you can sponsor me here.
I chose this portrait of myself for this week’s Gallery.
I am in awe of you! I wish I could do that! I know I could if I actually tried, but I am rubbish. I applaud you.
Thanks! I am one of those freaks who enjoys running though.
I wish I’d known you were running! I’d have kept track of you. I am so envious that you were able to discipline yourself to do it & so glad you shared your triumph!
Thanks for your kind words. I’m really bad at sharing my achievements usually, I tend to keep things quiet – but not this time! Sadly, my chip doesn’t seem to have worked, so I don’t think you’d have been able to track me, but it’s nice to know that you would have liked to.
I’m speechless (almost!) I don’t know how people WALK 26+ miles let alone run it at around 7 miles and hour! Well done you.
Thanks, I think it’s also an achievement that I can still walk!
You are amazing! Well done!
kim
Thanks Kim. At least I like running, it amazes me that people who hate running motivate themselves to get round a marathon to fundraise for charity. Brilliant.
Wow!!! Well done you!! That is amazing š V hard to get “your time” at the LM, as there are so many people and it is hard to find your pace.. so you DID SUPER DUPER!!! (better than me 7 years ago ;-))
Xx
Thankyou, and well done to you as well for doing it 7 years ago! Have you done any since, or was it a one off “experience”?!
Well done! What an amazing experience x
Thanks Sandy, and thanks for your support x
Bloody well done… seriously – nice one!! I bet you’re dead proud of that photo š
Thanks, I am! Can’t really give credit to the lovely guy who took it for me, but at least I repaid by taking one for him with his friends who’d just finished too!
I am so tempted by the challenge of doing it next year. You’ve really inspired me along with marathon mummy. Well done hunni and what an amazing pic for the gallery this week!
You are so going to do a marathon, I think that’s the 3rd or 4th time you’ve mentioned it to me! Didn’t you say you have a knee injury though? If you get that sorted then go for it, but don’t do anything that will hurt yourself x
That’s an amazing achievement, congratulations – great photo!
Thanks, think it will be going in a frame!
Congratulations! I think it would take me 4 days š But good on you, and great pic.
Thanks Heidi!
Amazing! Lovely photo and what an achievement!!!
Thanks Chelle!
How fantastic are you?! Brilliant photo, brilliant lady! Clap, clap, clappety clap! This made me grin from ear to ear!
Glad I made you smile, and thanks for the clappety clap!
Congratulations, you look great and what an achievement. One to always be proud of. Well done.
We were running around London to, saw my friend at miles 19, 23 and then after the finish..we couldn’t work out where/how to get to the actual finish. She was smiling everytime too.
Lovely photo too. :0)
My husband and friend had plans of getting around the course, none of us had appreciated just how manic this would be. They ended up walking from Canary Wharf into central London due to tube stations being at capacity and shutting.
Well done you! Best portrait in the gallery so far!!!
Wow, thanks!!
awesome š congratulations on completing the marathon. you are right to be very proud of yourself.
RESPECT – wow xx
congratulations. A very good time as well so my cap is doffed.
Tiddltompompom, Noted Red Shoes and Reggie – Thankyou all very much for your good wishes! I’m nuts, so I’m already planning the next one. I’ve not got to get too carried away though, so it’ll be next year.
Well done!! What a great accomplishment!
Thanks, planning the next one…
